Where Gustav Thöni, the ski superstar of the 1970s, first learned to ski: the Trafoi Ski Resort at the foot of the Ortles

What makes the small but perfectly formed skiing area around the cosy Forcola Mountain Hut (Furkelhütte) so special? One reason is that this is where Gustav Thöni first learned to ski! The ski superstar, who won 24 World Cup races, five World Championship titles, and one gold and two silver medals at the Winter Olympics in the 1970s, learned to ski in this charming, still somewhat secluded ski area. Today, he runs the Trafoi Ski School and supervises group and individual lessons, as well as a ski kindergarten in the beginners' area in the village.
The Trafoi Chairlift starts directly in the village centre of Trafoi all'Ortles, the starting point of the first ascent of Mt. Ortles by the chamois hunter "Pseirer Josele" in 1804. It takes you up to the Forcola Hut in the Stelvio National Park, from where further lifts lead even higher. The eleven kilometres of slopes in the Trafoi Skiing Area are mostly easy to intermediate.
You won't find a snow park or a fun slope here. Instead, you can expect wonderful opportunities for ski touring, snowshoeing, and tobogganing. The five-kilometre-long Trafoi toboggan run follows the famous Stelvio Pass road, and the village cross-country ski trail leads to the pilgrimage site of the Sacred Three Fountains. The ski tour to the Forcola Hut is particularly recommended - from up there you can enjoy a legendary panoramic view of the giant peaks of the Ortles Alps.
