Val Gardena, the Christmas Valley

Discover the magic of Christmas in the Dolomites with Ortisei’s Christmas Village and Selva’s Mountain Christmas Market

When the charming wooden huts open their doors in Advent, the Val Gardena transforms into a true Christmas Valley. This includes the Christmas Village in Ortisei, known as "Nadel Urtijëi" in Ladin, with its loden-clad stalls surrounding the St. Anthony Church. Here, you'll find regional products and culinary specialities, along with various festive events. From the end of November until the beginning of January, experience the daily magic of Christmas against the breathtaking backdrop of the Val Gardena Dolomites. The valley's traditions blend seamlessly with the elegant offerings of the hut proprietors. In 2024, the Christmas Village will celebrate its 10th anniversary.

At the end of the valley, Selva Gardena hosts the "Mountain Christmas", or "Nadel da Mont" in Ladin. Open during the same period, this Christmas Market offers a unique alpine village atmosphere. At its centre is a festively decorated cable car, seamlessly integrating the Val Gardena ski slopes into the Advent season. Vendors present their wares in nine wooden huts and thirteen small wooden gondolas. A snow sculpture competition is also part of this year's festivities.

Especially sought-after are the nativity figurines, crafted for generations by local woodcarvers. What once kept farmers busy during the winter months has become a globally appreciated craft. Val Gardena's third village also joins in the celebrations: In the little church of Monte Pana, at the foot of Mt. Sassolungo in Santa Cristina, contemplative Advent melodies performed by the Cor Sasslong choir and a clarinet quartet fill the air on the Feast of the Immaculate Conception.
