In Merano, the Municipal Theatre is located close to the town centre. Unmistakably artistically designed and decorated, it is enthroned on the eponymous Piazza Teatro between the Corso della Libertà road and the Ponte Teatro bridge. Its history is interesting: In 1884, a special construction committee was founded. The aim: to represent the spa town of Merano and enrich it in cultural terms. Once the location and financing had been finalised, the Munich architect Martin Dülfer won the tender. It was opened on the 1st December 1900 in the presence of illustrious guests.
For 15 years, performances and get-togethers took place in the honourable Municipal Theatre in the spa town before it was closed in the chaos of war. It reopened between the two world wars and was renamed Teatro Puccini in 1937 as an Italianisation measure. After serving as a cinema for some time and being damaged by a fire, it was listed as a historical monument after its reopening and today enriches the townscape of Merano as Stadttheater Meran or Teatro Civico di Merano.
Today, the "Ente Gestione Teatro e Kurhaus di Merano" association runs the Municipal Theatre, where concerts, theatre performances, readings and conferences take place in the red and gold hall with its salmon-coloured velvet chairs. 296 seats are available. There is also a costume rental and on warm summer evenings the terrace opens.
