Cows may feel threatened by walkers on the pastures or barking dogs
Although there is a lot of discussion about wolves and bears, most (even if few) attacks on hikers come from a different source: from cows. Especially if there are young animals nearby, the hiking trail leads through the cows' pasture and a dog is present, it can quickly become dangerous. Hikers and walkers should therefore treat cows with the appropriate respect and especially keep their distance from cute little calves. Here are some rules:
Behaviour rules:
- Do not climb over fences or walk through herds of cows, but follow the marked path
- Keep a reasonable distance from grazing animals: An alpine pasture is not a petting zoo or a selfie spot
- Do not fix your eyes on cows
- Walk past the animals in a relaxed manner
- Stress makes peaceful cows aggressive
Cows and dogs:
- Leash dogs (as also required by law): Dogs are seen as a danger
- If a cow attacks, unleash the dog so that it can escape quickly
- The hiker can get into safety better this way
Cow attack:
- Remain calm, make yourself tall and slowly move away backwards
- Do not turn your back on the animal
- Do not lie on the ground or run away hectically
