Comfortable walking tour in search for heralds of spring at the sunny slopes of the Valle Isarco valley - from Velturno along the Chestnut Trail to Verdignes and back again
Image gallery: Spring hike to Verdignes
The end of March/beginning of April, when the sunbeams become stronger, is a perfect time for this hike along a section of the Chestnut Trail between Velturno and Verdignes. We start at the tennis court and swimming pool of Velturno (parking space). Across the opposite Trumbichl hill, a rocky hill with dry grasslands, we walk towards the northern village part of Velturno to the castle.
Here we follow the "Keschtnweg" - Chestnut Trail (marker no. 18) towards south west, which proceeds through the entire village and then across a landscape with meadows and woods to the Moar zu Viersch Farm. We cross the Rio Pardell stream and take the marker no. 1 upwards to the hamlet of Verdignes (Verdings).
After a visit to the church we take the marker no. 3 back to the Chestnut Trail and again back to Velturno. On this sunny spring day we can watch the awakening of nature, like the first bloom of the Alpine anemone, the Pulsatilla alpina, which is famous for its dark purple colour.
