Lake Upi (also Lake Upia) is situated at an altitude of about 2,550 m a.s.l. in the Oetztal Alps: From the Val di Mazia, a path leads to the Upi Mountain Hut and another one continues to the idyllic lake

The starting point of the hiking tour into the lonely Upi Valley is the parking space at the Glieshof farm in the rear Val di Mazia valley. Here, passing the Hotel Glieshof, we follow the signpost no. 9 - this path leads us directly into the Upi Valley. The first half of the route leads through the forest to the meadows and the Upi Mountain Hut (Upialm) at 2,225 m a.s.l. Now, in early summer, the slopes of the entire valley are covered by flowering alpine roses - really impressive!
Brooks plunge into the valley from all sides and unite to the wildly foaming Rio Upi brook. At the Upi Mountain Hut the gravelled road ends and the route no. 9 leads as a path further uphill. Soon we reach a small waterfall, next to it the path leads through the rubble along the rock. This spot requires sure-footedness and special caution, as it can be a bit slippery.
At the top we pass a wet meadow and further on across high alpine meadows partly steep, partly on a flat path up to Lake Upi (Upisee) at 2.552 m a.s.l. The landscape, which is shaped by wind and weather, appears almost untouched and is dominated by the 3,175 m high Monte Upia and its neighbouring peaks. For our way back we take the same route later.
