A rushing mountain river accompanies us on our tour to the lovely Weitenberg Mountain Hut in the Val di Fundres valley

The Weitenberg Mountain Hut (Weitenbergalm) is located in the heart of the Fundres Mountains and is open in summer months. By car we reach Fundres (Pfunders) at the head of the valley with its mighty farmsteads, and go on to Dun, a hamlet at the very end. From the parking space, starting point for this walk, we proceed on foot. This is also where the walk to the Ponte di Ghiaccio Mountain Hut (Edelrauthütte) and Montestretto Mountain Hut (Engbergalm) start. One right curve is done on the asphalted road, close to the holiday apartment "Liabm" we do a sharp left curve and take the signposted path no. 6 towards the Weitenberg Hut.
The path is wide and makes walking a pleasure. The path leads into the forest and slowly our conversations run dry, as the path becomes steeper and steeper. On our left there is the deep gorge with the rushing mountain river flowing out of the valley. Slowly the path becomes more easy again and in front of us, there is a lushly green valley, run through by the mountain river that carries lots of glacial water at the moment. We traverse the river on a bridge and continue on its left riverside, slowly we diverge grom the river. We leave behind the turn-off to the Montestretto Hut. The view of the Fundres Mountains is getting more and more impressive, even if the weather is not too good today. There not only snow fields, but also the first alpine roses in full blossom.
Soon we reach the Weitenberg Hut, where you can stop in summer months and have a good lunch. After a pleasant break at this recently reconstructed mountain hut, we decide to walk back. In a left curve in the upper part we take a narrow path with the indication "Fundres", which is a cutoff. Close to the bridge we join the wide path again, that leads us back to our starting point, always flanked by the mountain river. The hike to the Weitenberg Mountain Hut can also be continued, e.g. to the eponymous lake or the Fundres Pass. The hut is also base camp for many mountain bikers who do the famous round tour to the Passo di Fundres. This walk can be done as a family walk if kids are used to mountaineering, as the walk is not to be considered difficult.
