Probably it is the oldest church in the Val Gardena valley and was a destination for many pilgrims already in the 13th century – the Church of San Giacomo above Ortisei (St. Ulrich). Our trip starts in the village centre where we follow the Rezia street and the former railway line and then the marker no. 6B towards Sacun - San Giacomo. We walk uphill through the forest until the junction with the asphalt road to Sacun (San Giacomo), which we follow.
San Giacomo (St. Jakob) consists of a group of houses on a meadow clearing round the Jakoberhof Hotel. Immediately behind the hotel the path no. 6B proceeds further uphill towards the church above of the hamlet, in the middle of the forest. This is a magic place. Behind the church tower the peak of the still snowy Sassolungo mountain juts out. Amidst the little meadow on the hillside we enjoy the sun before we walk back along the path no. 6 to Ortisei.
This path is a pleasant promenade through the forest which transitions into the so-called "Dialogweg" (Dialogue Path). This is a little park at the edge of the forest, where artworks and epigraphs invite to reflection. For the 6 km long circular walk, 2 hours of walking time have to be planned. Especially in the early season this walk is highly recommended.
