Hike to the crocus blossom at the Giogo di Meltina

The Giogo di Meltina in the Sarentino Alps is worth a visit in every season: in winter it is a popular snow-shoeing tour, in autumn it is particularly fascinating when the larch trees become yellow-golden and in summertime the lushly green meadows are eye-catching. However, this area is above all famous for the blossom of spring flowers in the last weeks of April and the first days of May. Starting from the Schermoos parking space (subject to charges) along the road, connecting Meltina to San Genesio Atesino, we walk about 100 m towards San Genesio Atesino.

This is where the forested road branches off to the Möltner Kaser mountain hut. This path that is not really well-kept and maintained takes us to the Föhrer Weiher pond, following the path no° 4, before we walk across the forest and Alpine pastures slightly upwards. The walking path joins a forested road and we follow the marks "Sattlerhütte" (signpost K). Past this mountain hut we walk again the way up, passing by the stone pit. Along the path there are some alpine snow-bells and crocuses, but the best is just around the corner. From the path, leading to the Malga Möltner Kaser, the European long-distance walking trail EFW 5 branches off on the right on a little hill.

We follow this path that brings us to alpine pastures that are to such an extent covered with crocuses that we almost cannot believe it. What a pity that the visibility is not that clear today, otherwise we could even have enjoyed the view of the Dolomites. We are stunned by this fascinating sight and the colours of nature. From this place we follow the signposts no° 17A and 5, leading us back to the Fahrerhof farms and finally to the parking space.
