Autumn is perfect for shorter hikes through South Tyrol’s colourful nature

Trees and shrubs turn red, orange and gold as they slowly prepare for the cold winter months. The months after mid-September are the perfect time of year for hikes at lower altitudes, combined with a traditional Toerggele afternoon with roasted chestnuts and new wine.
Themed trails such as the "Chestnut Trail" - called "Keschtnweg" in dialect - are ideal for this, as is any other hike that passes a Buschenschank, a traditional farm tavern. Plateaus like the Salto are also very popular at this time of year, as they are covered in larch forests that glow bronze and gold. At higher altitudes, snow may already be falling.
