From Brennero via Vipiteno to Bressanone: The Alta Valle Isarco Cycle Path snakes along the upper Isarco river
Image gallery: Upper Valle Isarco Cycle Path: Brennero - Bressanone
At the southern border of the municipality of Brennero (Brenner), in the west of the main road (SS12), the Upper Valle Isarco cycle track starts. From 1,370 m a.s.l. at the pass it stretches down to Colle Isarco, located 300 m lower in altitude. This cycle lane is about 20 km long and stretches parallel to the road, at Bagni di Brennero it branches off and runs on the former railway line.
After a turn into the Valle di Fleres, we proceed towards Colle Isarco, for some hundred metres along the main road, then further on along the cycling route and finally to the border of the Town of Vipiteno. We pass the centre (historic district and new town) and reach again the cycle route at the other end, which takes along the motorway up to Trens, across a bridge and on the west side of the valley to Stilves. On a field path, the track proceeds towards Le Cave and Mezzaselva. Here we have to change to the other side of the valley, before we continue cycling down to Fortezza.
Past the railway junction village, the cycle lane continues between Lake Fortezza and its fortress, afterwards under several motorway bridges. The fork with the Val Pusteria Cycle Track follows, but we keep right towards Bressanone and approach Lake Varna. At Varna, we cycle under a motorway bridge again and continue across the fruit orchards and vineyards of the Novacella Monastery and the Town of Bressanone. For the 600 m of altitude (with stops in between), we have been cycling about 3 hours now. If you would like to cycle the other way, calculate the ascent of about 880 m.
- Train & bicycle: regional trains with limited bicycle transport run parallel (stop in Brennero - Campo di Trens - Vipiteno - Prato Isarco - Fortezza - Bressanone)
