South Tyrol offers cycle paths through its beautiful valleys and mountain trails which reach up to 3,000 m a.s.l. - the cycle path network of the region includes more than 500 kilometres. Bolzano and Merano are known as "bicycle-friendly towns" and can measure up to the most bicycle-friendly towns of Europe. Both have received already several times the "Comune Ciclabile" (Cyclists Town) award from the FIAB (Italian Federation for Environment and Cycling) and both have been awarded the highest score, five bike-smiles, for their cycle paths, cycling policy and cycle tourism.
Currently for example, there are 16 bike sharing stations in Bolzano: The service is called "Fahrrad Bozen / Bici Bolzano" and is part of an extensive mobility concept. Merano, however, offers six stations where you can rent a bike for free, and its Sustainable Mobility Plan includes a bicycle plan. Also the bikemobil Card allows the rental of a bicycle in South Tyrol and the use of the means of public transport, in order to explore the region by bike and train.
