Asparagus farmers and winegrowers have created a unique gourmet event in Castelbello in the Val Venosta valley
Mid-April to the end of May is the best time to enjoy delicious asparagus dishes and the best asparagus wine in the Val Venosta. This is when the Castelbello Asparagus Weeks (Kastelbeller Spargelwochen) take place. In addition to Terlano on the Wine Road, where the famous Asparagus of Terlano, called "Margarethe", is produced, and the area around Nalles on the other side of the Adige Valley, Castelbello further north-west is also one of the areas where asparagus is cultivated.
This began around three decades ago with new varieties and cultivation techniques at the "Köfelgut", a winery with own distillery in Castelbello. Today, some selling points supply several restaurants in Castelbello, if possible still on the day of the harvest, where the asparagus is not only served in a wide variety of ways, but also honoured with a special asparagus wine. Four wineries supply the grape juice: the dry white wine "Asparagus". It is the perfect companion to fresh asparagus, served with potatoes, the new Castelbello asparagus sauce and ham.
