Get up close to birds of prey at Tyrol Castle’s Bird Care Centre in the Merano area

On the castle hill of Tyrol Castle, you'll find a unique South Tyrolean institution: the "Gufyland" Bird Care Centre (Pflegezentrum für Vogelfauna "Gufyland"). Originally opened in 1989 in Villa Ottone in the Pusteria Valley, it relocated to Tyrol Castle in 1998. Bird experts Willy Campei and Florian Gamper manage the centre. Every year, they care for around 250 injured wild birds - nursing them back to health and then releasing them back into the wild.
During their recovery, the birds inhabit spacious aviaries on the 9,000 sqm site - and that's precisely where you can observe them. A 300-metre-long educational trail with ten large information boards leads you to the aviaries. Here, you'll learn interesting facts about the local flora and fauna, the lives of wild birds, and the dangers they face.
The highlight, however, is the daily flight demonstrations: Experience eagle owls, eagles, buzzards, and other birds of prey circling impressively in the air. This special place is particularly well-suited for a family outing. How to get to the Bird Care Centre? Parking is available in Tirolo village.
From there, the car-free Via del Castello road leads to the castle and the centre in about 20 minutes. Note for visitors with pushchairs: There are steps at the entrance to the flight demonstration area. You can also combine the flight demonstration with a visit to the adjacent South Tyrolean Museum of Culture and Provincial History located at Tyrol Castle.
