Very popular in South Tyrol is the so-called Marende, a typical snack with cold cuts, spreads and black bread
The "Marende", the dialect word for afternoon snack, is very famous in South Tyrol. Thought to be a light snack, it can also be regarded as a main meal in the Toerggele season.
South Tyrolean "Speck" bacon is a main part of the Marende. It is seasoned according to typical South Tyrolean recipes and with its intensive taste it is the number 1 on the hit list of many gourmets. The "Kaminwurzen" - traditionally produced raw sausages -, various cheeses and ham can also be found on the plate. Pickled cucumbers and vegetables, horseradish, spreads and hard-boiled eggs are combined with it. Homemade bread, mostly black bread, is the best completion.
Since 2024, the "Kaminwurze" - such as milk, beer and apple juice - has been bearing the seal "Quality from South Tyrol" for regional food, allowing you to recognise quality and origin at first glance. The Marende has its most important time especially in autumn, when the farmers gather in the harvest and enjoy the Marende during their well-deserved breaks in the vineyards. A typical Marende can be found in all taverns and inns during the period of the Törggelen, but also on mountain huts in summer, the perfect snack after a hike. Enjoy!
