Already in 1999, the "Projektgruppe Weindorf Kaltern" project group, made up of wine producers, farmers and public representatives, laid the foundations for wein.kaltern, an initiative focused on promoting the culture of wine in Caldaro at Lake Caldaro and with the aim to make it a typical wine village. Caldaro, located at 224 metres a.s.l., is an ideal wine-growing area, surrounded by a natural landscape at the meeting point of Alpine and Mediterranean influences.
The area of wein.kaltern is marked by two massive white limestone slabs at the edges of the village. Furthermore there are several projects under the initiative, such as the wein.wegweiser (a brochure with an overview of the 68 partner companies), the wein.magazin journal (with annual review and news), the Wine Trail (a walk around Caldaro's vineyards), the Kalterersee glass (an own wine glass created by Riedel) and a wine guide with the local wines.
Furthermore, Caldaro offers various events dedicated to its wines, like the Wine Excursion Day in spring and the Caldaro Wine Party in May, as well as the events "Caldaro - All in Red" offering a huge selection of local red wines and "Caldaro - All in White" dedicated to white wines. In autumn, the Caldaro Wine Days (September) and "Wine and Cuisine" (October) take place.
