In the Val Badia valley, a magician once proposed marriage to a lady, Dona Dindia. She finally chose someone else, but the magician still appeared at the wedding and gave the young bride a magic mirror with which she could read other people's thoughts. For a long time she did not use it, but then she tried the mirror to test her husband's faithfulness. Disappointed by the waning love, the lady of the castle then left her husband, who killed himself with a sword in desperation.
Dona Dindia took the mirror and threw it into a lake in the Kingdom of Fanes, which then turned green. After that, the magician resumed his wooing. Finally, he imprisoned her in a castle guarded by a dragon who was already protecting a gemstone. Should a brave youth be found who, out of love for her, would take the risk to reach the gemstone, she would be free.
Otherwise, the alliance with the magician awaited her. A forest man who had observed all this, took this mirror out of the lake and gave it to a girl in the valley: With the mirror she recognised the man who really loved her, but demanded from him as proof of love the very gemstone that was so strictly guarded: the "Rayeta", the most magnificent jewel in the world. The youth defeated the dragon, but was himself mortally wounded, and the girl so lost her love for a precious stone. Dona Dindia however was free, and was able to save herself from marrying the magician...
