The world of birds in the Stelvio National Park is varied, unique, impressive and a good reason to dedicate one of its five South Tyroelan National Park Houses to it: the avimundus in the pedestrian zone of Silandro. The heart of the permanent exhibition is Hansjörg Götsch's bird collection, which tells of the breeding and rearing, song and life of native bird species. But the avimundus National Park House also shows the individual habitats in the national park and one of its most famous inhabitants: the griffon vulture, which was extinct here a century ago.
With a wingspan of about 2.5 metres, it is Europe's largest bird and lives up to its reputation as a bone breaker and "nature's health police". Today, 30 years after its first release, it is breeding again in the Stelvio National Park. A multimedia station and simple experiments complete the info point (Nationalparkhaus avimundus). If you would like to do a pleasant walk by foot afterwards, you may try the 2-hour hike along the wild Adige River, which takes you from Silandro to Lasa and shows you the characteristic orchards in the Val Venosta valley as well as the wild riverside woodland.
