The Fanes-Senes-Braies Nature Park is one of the biggest protected areas in South Tyrol and covers the municipalities of Badia, Marebbe, La Val, Valdaora, Dobbiaco and Braies. As its name suggests, it includes the area of the Braies Dolomites, the Senes Highland and large parts of the Fanes Group with the legendary Kingdom of Fanes. Four nature trails snake their way through the reserve: The Larch Trail above San Cassiano in the Badia Valley forms the border of the nature park. Furthermore, there are the Lake Dobbiaco Trail, the Maite Fountains Path and the "Tru dal'ega" path near the visitor centre in San Vigilio di Marebbe: It is dedicated to the topic of water.
Some of the most beautiful places of the region, such as Lake Braies and the Prato Piazza high plateau, are located in the Fanes-Senes-Braies Nature Park e are so popular, that they needed further protection in the form of a limited traffic concept. Due to its extension from the Upper Val Pusteria to the Alta Badia, also the range of activities on offer is huge: There are - to mention just a few - the hike in the Kingdom of Fanes and the MTB tour to the Prato Piazza in the warmer months as well as tours with mountaineering skis, with cross-country skis or with snow-shoes.
