Picco Ivigna

A remarkable panoramic mountain high above Merano is the Grande Ivigna (Big Ivigna), also called Picco Ivigna or Mt. Ifinger

Mt. Ivigna, the local mountain of Scena and Avelengo, is a huge granite rock towering at 2,581 m a.s.l. It is located in the Merano 2000 Skiing Area and Hiking Area and can be climbed from the Val Sarentino, from Falzeben above Avelengo as well as from Scena. The normal route from Merano 2000 up to slightly below the summit is rather easy: The cable car takes you at 1,900 m a.s.l., from where you reach the lower Piccolo Ivigna (Small Ivigna, 2,522 m a.s.l.) via the Kuhleiten Mountain Hut. The ascent from Scena is more challenging. The summit of Mt. Ivigna, compared to its minor neighbour Piccolo Ivigna, can only be climbed via the rather exposed south-west ridge.

However, once the top of the mountain is reached, you are compensated by a fabulous 360 degrees view on the Zillertal and Oetztal Alps, the Texel Group and the Ortles Alps up to the Dolomites. Did you know that the Ivigna Cable Car was one of the only remaining and still operating cable cars established by the famous South Tyrolean funicular builder Hans Troyer (1905 - 1992)? This Troyer Funicular was in operation between 1968 and 2010 - then it was replaced by the biggest two cabins of a cable car in South Tyrol which offer space for a total of 120 people.
