Villandro Alp

The Villandro Alp, one of the largest and most beautiful alpine pastures of South Tyrol, can be found in the Valle Isarco valley

The Villandro Alp, called Villanderer Alm in German, is a rather flat high alp that covers a surface of 20 sqkm and stretches from 1,700 metres a.s.l. up to the 2,509 m high Monte di Villandro, the most southern summit of the east ridge of the Sarentino Alps. The highland is surrounded by the villages of Barbiano, Chiusa, the name-giving Villandro and the Val Sarentino valley.

Above all the lush meadows, the mountain pines and the beautiful view on the western Dolomites with the Siusi Alp, Mt. Sciliar and the Odle Group are the main reasons why this area is that popular. In the last years the high plateau, which can be reached via the Gasser Hut, has become increasingly popular. The path represents hardly any drop. Also the cosy wooden huts and a keep-fit-trail make it popular: In fact, there are some 100 mountain huts spread all over the Villandro Alp, whereas the road up leads past excursion destinations such as the Villandro Silver Mine.

Therefore you may combine a pleasant walk - like the hike to the Villandro Alp - with a stop in one of the refuges where you may taste the South Tyrolean deliacies. In the cold months of the year, however, the highland turns into a paradise for hikers and tobogganists. Here you'll find the winter hike to the Stöffl Hut and the Neuweg toboggan run between the Gasser Hut and Speckboden, as well as the four easy family toboggan runs Toten, Baita Stöffl, Mair in Plun and Rinderplatz.
