Mining Museum - Location Monteneve

Explore Europe’s highest mine in the Val Passiria valley - a journey through history and nature

High above the Val Passiria valley, at 2,355 metres, the Monteneve mountain offers a unique experience: a former mining settlement and a fascinating mine. St. Martin, the name of the settlement, is one of four locations of the South Tyrol Museum of Mining.

A document dating back to 1237 already mentions the "good silver from the Monteneve". For 800 years, mining was carried out in the mountain ridge between the Val Passiria and the Val Ridanna valleys - silver, lead, and zinc were extracted until 1985. In the exhibition room, you can delve into the history of mining: Old photos, documents, and tools tell of the miners' arduous work.

Afterwards, step inside Europe's highest mine. Since 1991, it has been accessible as a show mine through guided tours. The full-day "Exploring the mining area" tour offers a guided hike, a visit to the exhibition room, the mining area, and the miners' village. For a more comprehensive experience, choose the "Adventure Monteneve". You can even stay overnight in the mountain hut next to the exhibition room. How to get to the Monteneve Museum: It is only accessible on foot.

In addition, you can also hike there independently: It starts at the Monteneve Bridge near Corvara in Passiria on the Passo del Rombo Road (parking available) and takes about two hours. Alternatively, a trail leads up from the Ridanna Mining World in the Val di Vizze in four hours.
