Already in the 15th century there has been mining industry in Tyrol. Also in Predoi in the rear Valle Aurina valley they found copper at 2,000 m a.s.l., above the treeline, which became famous beyond borders. The miner's life was very dangerous, that is why this profession had more patron saints and founded more religious buildings than any other in Tyrol.
First the exhibits were stored in the Gassegg Manor, in 2000 then they were transferred to the former Grain Store in Cadipietra. The building, built around 1700, was used as administrative seat of the Predoi Mine. Nowadays it is one out of the four locations of the South Tyrol Museum of Mining: The comprehensive collection of the Lords of Enzenberg (Enzenberg Collection) provides information about the lives of miners on the basis of mine plans, documents and findings in a multimedia manner and also emphasises the social aspects of the hard miners' lives underground. The "Virtual Cabinet of Wonder" makes you take a closer look at selected items.
On a regular basis also special exhibitions as well as art events and concerts are organised in the Grain Store (Bergbaumuseum im Kornkasten). And how to reach the Location Cadipietra? It is located along the state road, a parking space is available. Also bus line no. 450 (Brunico-Valle Aurina) stops there. With the combined ticket, you may visit the Mining Museum in the Grain Store in Cadipietra and the Predoi Mine in the neighbouring eponymous village.
