Mining Museum - Location Cadipietra

Explore the history of the Predoi copper mine at the grain store in Cadipietra

As early as the 15th century, the search for ore was underway throughout Tyrol. High above the tree line in Predoi, at an altitude of almost 2,000 metres, valuable deposits were discovered. Predoi's copper became renowned. However, life underground was perilous. Consequently, no profession in Tyrol established as many patron saints and religious buildings as that of the miners.

A museum has been dedicated to their lives and to the Predoi Mine: Originally housed in Gassegg Mansion in Cadipietra, the collection was relocated to the former grain store in 2000. Built around 1700, this building once served as a food store for the Predoi Mine. Today, it is one of four locations of the South Tyrol Museum of Mining. The multimedia-enhanced Enzenberg family collection illustrates life in the Predoi Mine through maps, discovered objects, and documents.

The social aspects of the arduous life underground are also highlighted. In the "Virtual Cabinet of Wonder", you can digitally explore and examine individual objects from the Enzenberg Collection. The grain store also hosts special exhibitions (e.g. "Images of People: Miners in Portrait") and other events such as concerts and art exhibitions.

How to get there: The Mining Museum - Location Cadipietra (Landesmuseum Standort Steinhaus) is easily accessible. It is situated on the main road, and parking is available. The 450 bus route (Brunico-Valle Aurina) also stops at the museum. A combined ticket allows you to visit both the Museum in the Grain Store and the Predoi Show Mine, 11 kilometres away.
