Explore 800 years of mining history at the Ridanna Mining World in the Upper Valle Isarco

The Monteneve mountain in South Tyrol was once home to the highest permanently inhabited settlement in Europe. As early as the 13th century, the "good silver of the Monteneve" was documented. For 800 years, miners toiled at altitudes exceeding 2,300 metres, extracting silver, lead, and zinc from the mountain ridge between the Val Passiria and the Val Ridanna valleys.
Operations finally ceased in 1985. A state-of-the-art ore processing plant operated in Masseria in the Val Ridanna valley until 1979 - a unique monument to the industrial revolution. Both sites, Monteneve and Ridanna, now form a museum complex and belong to the South Tyrol Museum of Mining. Here, you can experience 800 years of mining history first-hand: from extraction and transportation to ore processing. During guided tours, the facilities are even put into operation.
At the show mine in Ridanna, you can visit the exhibition, explore the 200-metre-long show tunnel, and hike the Obere Erzstrasse (Upper Ore Road), the former location of the world's largest above-ground ore conveyor system on rails. How to get to the museum?
It is located in Masseria in the Val Ridanna, 16 kilometres from the town of Vipiteno. Parking is available. The 312 bus route runs between Vipiteno and Ridanna, stopping directly at the mine. On foot, you can reach the Mining Museum - Location Ridanna (Landesmuseum Standort Ridnaun) via the Obere Erzstrasse Path from Mareta in 3.5 hours.
