MuseumPasseier - Andreas Hofer

The MuseumPasseier can be visited in the Sandhof farm in San Leonardo in Passiria, Andreas Hofer’s birthplace (1767 - 1810)

Andreas Hofer, the Tyrolean freedom fighter, is the protagonist of a museum in the Val Passiria valley. It is located at the Sandhof farm with its Sandwirt tavern, a building steeped in history. On a surface of 500 sqm, you can discover more about the myth Hofer and the Tyrolean freedom fight of 1809 against the French troops under Napoleon. The exhibition consists of three areas: "Heroes & Hofer" is dedicated to Andreas Hofer and his period of time, "Heroes & Us" deals with the topic of heroes and role models, and "Valley & people" is an open-air site that shows a typical farmstead of the Val Passiria valley, called "Haufenhof", with a multitude of outbuildings.

The offer of the MuseumPasseier - "MuseumPasseier" in German, "MuseoPassiria" in Italian - is completed by a comprehensive collection of music of the Val Passiria valley, called "The Passeier Sound", as well as interactive elements for kids, such as the Andreas Hofer Quiz or a podium to feel yourself as a hero. Near the museum, there are the Hofer Memorial Chapel and a new fish pond. Beside the main seat, however, the MuseumPasseier has a few more outposts, that is to say the French Cemetery in the valley, Giovo Castle and the museum at the Pfistrad Alp, a mountain pasture located in idyllic position high above San Leonardo in Passiria.

If you would like to combine a visit to the museum with a nice walk, you can choose between the Andreas Hofer round trail and the "Passeirer Schluchtenweg" path through the Passirio Gorge. The round trail leads you from the tourist office to the Sandhof farm in about 1.5 hours. The latter, however, takes you from the San Leonardo sports area in 2.5 hours to the Bunker Mooseum which is accessible with a combined ticket. And how to reach the MuseumPasseier? It can be found along the state road and offers a parking space. Also the bus stops near the entrance ("Sandhof").
