"The enchanted mountain" at Firmiano Castle near Bolzano is dedicated to man's encounter with the mountains: The focus is set on the mountains in art and the history of their ascent, whereas the so-called "White Tower" tells about the history of the autonomy of South Tyrol.
The MMM Firmian represents the centerpiece of the museum project by Reinhold Messner: Stairs, towers and an outdoor area lead you from one section to the next. Art works, installations and relics can be admired in the inside - outside, the panoramic view stretches from the Valle dell'Adige to the Texel Group and, in the other direction, to the main town of South Tyrol and the Sciliar Massif, the landmark of the region. Steel, glass and iron - both modern and timeless materials which perfectly harmonise with the old walls - have been used for the renovation works.
The MMM Firmian offers also a castle tavern which invites visitors to a break in the sun. And how to reach the museum? A small road leads from Frangarto up the hill to the parking space. If you'd like to be active, you can cycle to Frangarto on the Oltradige Cycle Path which passes beneath the castle, and reach the MMM Firmian from the village in a short walk.
