The Palais Mamming shows extraordinary exhibits like a mummy and Napoleon’s death mask

The Municipal Museum first opened its doors in 1900, making it one of the oldest museums in South Tyrol. Its founder was the Merano physician Franz Innerhofer (1847-1918), whose collection of Gothic figures and Tyrolean Baroque master paintings formed the foundation of the museum.
From its original location in the English Ladies' building on the Winter Promenade, the museum moved several times over the years, including a stint in the former Roter Adler inn in the Via delle Corse road. Since its reopening in 2015, it has resided in the renovated Palais Mamming at the Piazza Duomo square, the Merano Church Square, in the heart of the Old Town of Merano.
Now also bears this name. Across 27 sections, the museum's permanent collection presents the historical development of Merano, from prehistory and early history through all facets of urban life to modern art. Its extraordinary exhibits are fascinating: an Egyptian mummy, a death mask of Napoleon, and the Sudanese weapons of the Austrian adventurer Slatin Pascha.
How do get to the Palais Mamming: You'll find the Merano Municipal Museum (Stadtmuseum Meran) at the end of the Merano Arcades, right next to the Parish Church of St. Nicholas. Parking is available nearby, and the nearest bus stop is in the Via delle Corse road, a six-minute walk away. You can also purchase a combined ticket for the museum and the Princes' Castle Merano.
