The LUMEN Museum of Mountain Photography (LUMEN Museum der Bergfotografie) opened in 2018 on Mt. Plan de Corones. The 2,275-metre summit, on the edge of the Dolomites, is a popular hiking area in summer and an even more renowned ski resort in winter. A fitting location for a museum entirely dedicated to mountain photography! A historic building, formerly the cable car's mountain station since 1963, has been modernised directly on the summit plateau.
This building later served as a restaurant and accommodation. Over a two-year construction period - a collaboration between the Kronplatz Holding AG, the Tyrolean Archive for Photographic Documentation and Art (TAP), Red Bull Illume, Alinari, and National Geographic - it was transformed into a museum with breathtaking views of the Dolomites, thanks to its large windows.
The photographs on display span a broad arc, from the history of mountain photography, through inspiring temporary exhibitions, to future visions. Besides the Museum of Mountain Photography, the building also houses event and meeting rooms, as well as the AlpiNN - Food Space & Restaurant, run by the renowned Michelin-starred chef, Norbert Niederkofler.
Incidentally, Mt. Plan de Corones hosts another museum, the MMM Corones, one of the six Messner Mountain Museums. There, the focus is on traditional alpinism. How to get there: The LUMEN is easily accessible via the Plan de Corones 2000 Cable Car from Riscone (with parking at the valley station). A combined ticket for the museum and cable car is available.
