Henrik Johan Ibsen, the celebrated 19th-century Norwegian playwright and poet, widely regarded as one of the most significant figures of modern literature until his death in 1906, also has a connection to Colle Isarco in the Upper Valle Isarco. In the latter half of the 19th century, the village blossomed into a popular health resort, attracting numerous travellers thanks to the newly built railway. During his self-imposed exile (1864-1891), Ibsen also stayed several times here.
He was particularly fond of strolling along the nearby streams, earning him the nickname "Bachmandl" (little stream man) from the locals. He primarily worked at night, rinsing his inkwell in the fountain each morning. His encounter with the young Viennese woman, Emilie Bardach, which began in Colle Isarco, influenced his work during these years, including plays like "The Pillars of Society", "A Doll's House" (Nora), and "An Enemy of the People".
In 1889, the idea for "Hedda Gabler," a four-act play written in 1890, began to take shape. Colle Isarco is even mentioned in the second act. In 1997, as part of the 8th International Ibsen Congress, the council chamber in the Colle Isarco municipal offices was transformed into the Henrik Ibsen Memorial Room. It now houses an exhibition dedicated to him.
Historical images, postcards, photographs, and letters related to Ibsen's work in the Upper Valle Isarco valley are on display. How to get there: It's located in the municipal offices on the Piazza Ibsen square in the centre of Colle Isarco, where parking is also available.
