Bunker Mooseum

A 1940s bunker in the Val Passiria valley houses a museum of the MuseumHinterPasseier project

In the village of Moso in Passiria, you'll find the Bunker Mooseum. Along with the Timmel Transit - Passo del Rombo Experience and the new Stieber Mooseum, it forms the MuseumHinterPasseier, literally the MuseumUpperPassiria. Another structure, the KultMuseum in the hamlet of Plata, is currently under construction. The bunker housing the Bunker Mooseum dates back to the 1940s.

At that time, the Italian military built several fortifications in the Val Passiria, including the "Opera 3 - Sbarramento di Moso" barrier. The bunker was part of the Alpine Wall, intended to prevent German troops from advancing from the Passo del Rombo. There's much to discover inside the Bunker Mooseum: an archaeological area with an excavation site is located within the rock tunnel.

During excavations for the museum's establishment, a glacial mill, pottery fragments, and several fireplaces were unearthed. Other exhibition areas provide information about the Monteneve Mine, located further north - the highest mine in Europe at 2,355 metres - as well as the bunker itself and the historical context of its era. The museum's highly visible glass tower houses the information point of the Gruppo di Tessa Nature Park. In the rocky enclosure above the bunker, you can observe ibex and a pair of rock ptarmigan in an aviary.

How to get there: You can reach the museum in the village centre of Moso, approximately 27 kilometres north of Merano along the state road 44. Bus routes 240 (Merano-San Leonardo in Passiria) and 241 (San Leonardo in Passiria-Moso in Passiria) serve the valley.
