Welsperg Castle

Perched at the entrance to the Val Casies valley sits the oldest castle in the Upper Val Pusteria

Welsperg Castle (the old name of Welsberg, that's to say Monguelfo) is located above Monguelfo. This unusual complex is considered an original inner castle, characterised by a compact, fortified core. One of the oldest parts is the keep, dating back to 1126. The castle was commissioned by the brothers Schwikher and Otto von Welsperg. The Lords of Welsperg were among the most important noble families in Tyrol at that time. Through trade, administrative activities, and strategic marriages, they steadily increased their wealth and influence.

In 1359, Georg von Welsperg acquired Torre Castle near Tesido, located opposite Welsperg Castle. With both castles in their possession, the Welsperg family extensively expanded and renovated the building between the 15th and 16th centuries.

However, a fire in 1765 destroyed large parts of the complex, including the main residential building (Palas) and the outbuildings. Despite renovations, Welsperg Castle remained uninhabited. Today, the Welsperg Castle Curatorial Cooperative organises concerts and festivals within the castle walls during the summer. It is privately owned by the Counts of Thun-Hohenstein-Welsperg. Visitors can explore the complex and admire exhibitions by South Tyrolean artists.

How to get there: Welsperg Castle is about a 10-minute walk above Monguelfo. The 2.5-kilometre-long Castle Path starts in the village centre and leads directly past the castle. The 6-kilometre-long "Grand Castle Circuit" also takes you to the ruins of Torre Castle.
