Rafenstein Castle

Exploring Rafenstein Castle near Bolzano: history and hiking tips around the South Tyrolean capital

High above Bolzano, at the entrance to the Val Sarentino, stand the imposing ruins of Rafenstein Castle. They are visible from afar, towering over the Talvera Gorge in the Bolzano district of Centro-Piani. Frederick of Vanga, Prince-Bishop of Trento, commissioned the castle's construction in the 13th century to control the trade routes between north and south and secure his dominion over Bolzano. Its strategic location on a major trade route made Rafenstein a powerful stronghold from the Middle Ages well into the early modern period.

At that time, the castle consisted only of a main residential building, a keep, and a curtain wall. A fortified outer wall, the gate tower, and the south wing were added in the 14th century. Franz von Ravenstein became lord of the castle in 1357. After his son's premature death, ownership passed first to the Goldegg family and later, through inheritance, to the Weinecker family.

From 1500 to 1599, Rafenstein was owned by Sigmund Gerstl and Hans Wueff before passing to the Counts of Wolkenstein-Trostburg. The 16th century marked the most significant construction phase: the medieval castle was renovated in the late Gothic style. Only in the 19th century, when the Counts of Wolkenstein-Trostburg ceased to inhabit Rafenstein, did the castle fall into disrepair.

Today, only ruins remain. Following restoration and preservation work in recent years, the site is once again accessible for guided tours, organised by Roncolo Castle, upon request. The nearby Rafenstein Castle restaurant sadly closed some time ago. How to get there: Rafenstein can be reached by car via a narrow road, recommended only for experienced mountain drivers. Hikers can reach the ruins from the valley station of the old San Genesio Cable Car - the incline is a considerable 25%. It is a station along Castelronda - The Castle Path.
