The history of Campan Castle (Schloss Campan) in Caldaro on the Wine Road dates back to the 13th century, specifically to 1268. It was then that Concius of Campan moved from Termeno to Caldaro and built a residential tower at his new home.
After the family line died out in 1499, Campan Castle changed hands several times. In the 19th century, the castle came into the possession of the Counts of Enzenberg, who had it renovated. The Counts of Enzenberg's history in viticulture spans centuries. Today, a cuvée of Merlot and Cabernet Franc produced at the family-owned Manincor winery bears the name "Castel Campan".
Until recently, guided tours of the castle, showcasing its big game hunting trophies and murals, were offered. Today, Campan Castle is once again a private residence. Particularly noteworthy inside are the 15th-century Notburga Chapel adorned with frescoes and the historic wine cellar.
How to get there: Campan Castle is located in the Via Garnellen road in the Caldaro district of Villa di Mezzo. Information panels outside the castle provide details about its long history.
