Perched high above Missiano near Appiano are the medieval ruins of Boymont Castle

Boymont Castle (Schloss Boymont), also known as Boimont, stands on a wooded ridge above Missiano and is part of the castle landscape surrounding Appiano on the Wine Road. Archaeological finds indicate that the castle hill was already settled in prehistoric times. Around 1235, the Counts of Appiano built the complex and granted it as a fief to the Boymont family.
The name probably means "ox mountain". Around 1400, Ulrich Kässler, a secretary to Frederick "of the Empty Pockets", occupied Boymont Castle. He married Barbara of Boymont in 1413. Shortly afterwards, the complex burnt down - probably due to an inheritance dispute - and fell into ruin. The period between 1220 and 1240 is considered the golden age of Tyrolean castle construction.
Boymont was also built during this phase. The complex was not intended for defence, but served as a residential castle and was attractively designed. The clean lines of the building are striking. The rectangular floor plan is atypical for medieval architecture. Romanesque and early Gothic stylistic elements are evident: beautiful triforia, windows with three arches, adorn the curtain wall. The main tower in the north-east has an unusual, eastward-facing arched opening. On the first floor, above the entrance, is the chapel. Today, the ruins have been renovated and consolidated.
The castle is owned by the proprietors of Corba Castle: Fritz Dellago had Boymont restored in 1977. In the courtyard, there's a small tavern serving drinks and traditional dishes. How to get there: The ruins are one of the destinations on the well-known Three Castles Walk in Appiano - from Corba Castle, the ruins of Boymont Castle can be reached in 25 minutes on foot.
