Owl Park San Vigilio

The Owl Park San Vigilio in San Vigilio di Marebbe is home to up to 110 birds, mainly owls and screech owls

The Fanes-Senes-Braies Nature Park is home to five of the owl species living in South Tyrol. In the wild, however, they are very rarely seen, because they are not only nocturnal, their flight is also absolutely silent. Flying is the wrong term, because owls and screech owls show no signs of exertion: They glide through the air as if they were weightless. If you want to see them from close up, you can pay a visit to the owl park of falconer Mario: It is located in San Vigilio, next to the "Ciamaor Beach" in the Val Badia. A new snack bar was inaugurated in 2023 next to the entrance.

Around 110 birds live here, which you can get to know during a visit or - in high summer - during an educational guided tour, a flight demonstration or a night hike. These include Johann, the barn owl, and the enchanting owl offspring in early summer, which reaches an impressive size in just a few weeks. Did you know that the barn owl is one of the most widespread bird species, even though you hardly ever see it? Or that the cute tawny owl has a wingspan of almost 1 metre?

In the Owl Park San Vigilio - "Eulenpark St. Vigil" in German and "Parco delle Civette a San Vigilio" in Italian -, owl chicks are born under expert supervision and control, information on endangered species is provided and immersion in a world of its own is possible, dedicated to the masters of silent flight and the king of the Alps, the golden eagle. The animals were all born in captivity, but injured animals are also cared for - in collaboration with the Fanes-Senes-Braies Nature Park - in order to preserve these wonderful birds and bring them closer to the visitor. A very special gift idea is to adopt an owl, e.g. a snowy owl like Harry Potter's Hedwig. And how can the park be reached? It is located at the Ciamaor Sports Centre in San Vigilio, about 17 km from Brunico. There are plenty of parking spaces, and the San Vigilio di Marebbe shuttle service stops here.
