On the way to the Stelvio Pass, near Trafoi all'Ortles, lies the small church of the Sacred Three Fountains, a Marian pilgrimage site with a fascinating legend. It's located by the Rio Madriccio. Nearby, you'll find a red deer enclosure: With a little luck, you can observe two of these animals.
The impressive red deer are naturally shy and, due to human encroachment, have become more nocturnal than diurnal. Therefore, it's difficult to spot them during the day, especially on warm and busy summer days. Chamois and red deer also live in abundance in the Stelvio National Park in the wild - red deer are the largest cloven-hoofed game species in South Tyrol.
Another red deer enclosure, "Fragges", can be found just a few kilometres away in Stelvio. It's named after the hamlet of Fragges, which, like Trafoi, belongs to the municipality of Stelvio. A lovely two-hour hike to the Forcola Mountain Hut starts directly at the enclosure.
How to get to the red deer enclosures: A road leads almost directly to the Sacred Three Fountains, from where it's just a few minutes' walk. From Trafoi, you can embark on a family hike to the Sacred Three Fountains of Trafoi. There is also a road leading to Fragges.
