Trafoi all'Ortles is the name of the small village on the way to the Stelvio Pass. The road leads from Gomagoi to the foot of Mt. Ortles, where the houses and farms of the high-alpine holiday resort are spread out. The centre is divided into two parts: On the one hand, there are accommodation establishments, a grocery shop and the naturatrafoi National Park House. Then a few more houses gather around the Parish Church of the Visitation of Mary. The Pentecost pilgrimage starts there every Whit Monday, during which the highly venerated Image of Our Lady is solemnly brought to the pilgrimage church of the Sacred Three Fountains further into the valley.
The place name also refers to this pilgrimage site: Trafoi comes from the Rhaeto-Romanic Tra Ful, which means "three springs". The site, known as Drei Brunnen in German and Tre Fontane Sacre in Italian, was built above three ancient healing springs in South Tyrol and promised healing against weather damage, eye ailments and women's ailments - if one drinks from all fountains. The well house near the little church provides information about the legend. The surroundings here are dreamlike and made for a day in nature - next to it is a red deer enclosure.
More than 300 days of sunshine a year and the breathtaking panorama attract visitors to this glacier region on the Stelvio Pass Road at any time of the year. From Trafoi you can reach the Forcola Hut by chairlift or on foot, a popular summer stop with panoramic view. In winter, the ski slopes in the Trafoi Skiing Area start here, where Gustav Thöni already practised his first turns and subsequently became one of the exceptional top athletes in alpine skiing. Cross-country skiers can explore the pilgrimage site on the Trafoi cross-country ski track, and we also have something special for tobogganers: The Trafoi toboggan run follows the legendary Passo dello Stelvio Road.
