The municipality of Renon covers an entire sunny plateau between Soprabolzano and the skiing and hiking area of the Corno del Renon
On the sunny side of the Sarentino Alps lies the Renon Plateau, a refreshing extension of the provincial capital of Bolzano. The cable car connects it in a few minutes with Soprabolzano, where the busy city life with its museums and shopping opportunities gives way to long hikes, meadows and small villages. There are also some sights on the Renon - mostly connected to nature, such as the mighty Renon Earth Pyramids and the Beekeeping Museum. Horse riding and swimming, llama trekking and archery, cycling and sledging, ice skating and skiing are among the sports you can practice here.
"The Renon", is composed by a total of 14 hamlets and villages. The first along the mountain road is Auna di Sotto, while continuing uphill you reach Collalbo, where the RittenArena is located, an ice rink and event location. There the road splits up. To the left you arrive at Auna di Sopra and Vanga, straight ahead to the Corno del Renon Cable Car and to the right to Longomoso and Longostagno. Interestingly, the Renon even touches the valley floor. The municipal boundary is at the entrance to the Val Sarentino Valley, where Castel Novale with the ice rink of Bolzano is already part of the Renon. On the other side, towards the Valle Isarco, there's Campodazzo.
Several of these places are connected by the Renon Railway, a historic narrow-gauge railway. Summers here are pleasantly warm, but much fresher than in the valley basin, what famous guests like Sigmund Freud appreciated. The wealthy citizens of Bolzano discovered the Renon for their summer retreat already in the 17th century. Today, many families live here enjoying the wide countryside and nature: In 2023, the municipality was awarded the title of "child-friendly municipality" by the VKE, the association for children's playgrounds and recreation. The last weeks before winter arrives are dedicated to the traditional Toerggelen on the high plateau. The Chestnut Trail leads across it, a wonderful panoramic stage in this area, best rounded off with roasted chestnuts and other delicacies. In winter you will have fun on the ski slopes of the skiing area Corno del Renon.
