The Stanghe or Gilfenklamm Gorge is a unique natural highlight only a stone’s throw from Vipiteno in the Upper Valle Isarco

If you follow the trail from the hamlet of Stanghe in Racines along the Rio Racines, you reach a small gorge, the Stanghe Gorge. It was opened in 1896 and was named "Kaiser-Franz-Josefs-Klamm", after Franz Joseph I of Austria. A small commemorative plaque reminds this fact.
On an established 2.5 km long trail you can walk across this charming and breathtaking canyon with its waterfalls cascading into the depth in the Upper Valle Isarco. During its course, the initially small Rio Racines brook turns into a roaring river which has been carving its way through the marble walls for centuries. Experience the forces of nature during the 1-hour walk and the uniqueness of this fabulous natural monument from mid-May to early November.
Here in the Val Racines, marble has been successfully quarried for a long time - the Stanghe Gorge dug 15 metres deep into the relatively soft stone. At several places it shows its pure white colour, whereas in others it shines in green shades. Did you know that part of the marble used in the Court Church Innsbruck with its famous "Black Men", known as "Schwarze Mander", comes from South Tyrol? Right from the Stanghe Gorge near Vipiteno, the only marble gorge in Europe!
