Mining Museum - Location Predoi

Copper mining and healing climate in the Valle Aurina - the fascinating guided tours of the Predoi Mine

Copper ore has been mined in the mountains of Predoi, along the Rio Rosso stream, since the 15th century. The first documented mention dates back to 1426 AD and relates to the casting of a cannon. Copper ore, primarily used for wire production, was extracted here until the 20th century.

Active mining operations ceased in 1971. Today, cement copper is still extracted using an alternative method involving bacteria. The St. Ignatius Gallery, located at an altitude of 1,500 metres, was converted into a show mine in the 1990s and is now one of the four locations of the South Tyrol Museum of Mining. The mine train takes you one kilometre into the mountain to explore the mine. Within the gallery itself, behind a partition wall, lies the Predoi Climate Gallery.

Its unique microclimate can provide relief for respiratory problems. Afterwards, the St. Ignatius Inn, called "Ignazstube", with its sun terrace, offers a welcoming spot to relax and enjoy a warm meal. You can also experience the history of the mine along a themed trail: The Miners' Trail leads you through the natural beauty of the Valle Aurina valley, vividly portraying 500 years of mining history. It passes several old galleries before ending near the Croce Rossa at an altitude of 2,064 metres.

How do you get there: The Mining Museum - Location Predoi (Landesmuseum Standort Prettau) is located on the main road just beyond the village. Parking is available. The bus route 450 (Brunico-Valle Aurina) stops directly at the mine. With a combined ticket, you can visit both the Location Predoi and the Location Cadipietra located in a grain store.
