Below Tyrol Castle sits the imposing Fontana Castle, home to the Agricultural Museum

In the area surrounding Tirolo village, you'll find Tyrol Castle and, a little further down, Fontana Castle (Brunnenburg). It was built in the mid-13th century by the Lords of Tarant. Tyrol Castle already existed at that time. In the following centuries, Fontana Castle progressively fell into disrepair. By 1600, it was already described as "old and dilapidated".
At the beginning of the 20th century, a private buyer initiated the castle's restoration. It gained renown at the end of the 1950s, when the American poet Ezra Pound (1885-1972) chose it as his residence. Here, he completed his life's work, the "Cantos". From 1962 until his death, he was registered as a resident of Tirolo village. A memorial to him is housed within the castle.
Numerous legends and stories surround Fontana Castle, most of which speak of a hidden treasure. Today, it houses an agricultural museum, the Fontana Castle Museum. To the delight of younger visitors, farm animals also live at the castle. Donkeys and rabbits have found a home here, as have old and rare breeds of livestock, including Mangalitsa pigs and Racka sheep.
How to get there: From the car park in Tirolo village, it's about a 10-minute walk. A visit to Fontana Castle can be easily combined with a hike on the Tirolo Wine Trail or Tirolo Apple Trail.
